FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax requires self-employed individuals and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 (from April 2026) to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software like Regulas.
Do I need to use HMRC MTD software?
If your qualifying income exceeds the threshold, yes. HMRC requires you to use MTD-compatible software to keep digital records and make quarterly submissions. Paper returns will no longer be accepted for those in scope.
When does Making Tax Digital for Income Tax start?
Phase 1 begins 6 April 2026 for those with qualifying income over £50,000. Phase 2 (£30,000+) starts April 2027, and Phase 3 (£20,000+) from April 2028.
What counts as qualifying income?
Qualifying income is your gross income from self-employment and/or property before expenses. It does not include employment income, dividends, or pension income.
Does Regulas replace my Self Assessment?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax replaces the Self Assessment return with quarterly updates plus a final declaration. Regulas handles both — you won't need to file a separate SA100 for the income covered by MTD.
Can I use Regulas for rental income?
Yes. Regulas supports UK property, foreign property, and joint ownership scenarios. Features include Section 24 mortgage interest relief calculations, portfolio views, and landlord-specific expense categories.
Is my data secure with Regulas?
Absolutely. We use AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.3 in transit, and connect to HMRC via their official MTD API with OAuth 2.0 authentication. Your credentials are never stored.
How much does Regulas cost?
We offer a free tier for basic record-keeping. Paid plans start at £5.99/month for quarterly submissions, with Pro at £12.99/month for AI categorisation, and Enterprise at £29.99/month for agents managing multiple clients.
